A Fresh Start

The new year always brings about new thoughts, new plans and a fresh start.  As a teacher, that happens two times every year.  The usual New Year, in January, brings fresh changes for my personal life...usually weight loss!  Come July, I'm looking forward to learning about my new students, facing the challenges they bring, and improving upon the craft of teaching.

This year is no different!  I have enjoyed my summer break, but about three weeks in I begin to get antsy!  I got my hands on some classified class lists and quickly got to work.  My computer is full of amazing activities, lists, forms, and notes to begin the year.  My computer sticky thing is full of PDF's (so as to keep my cute fonts and formatting), and my BINDER is finally ready to go!

I would like to introduce you to my sanity!  This BINDER has been a work of organization as I get ready for the 2013-2014 school year.  It is a compilation of much pinning on Pinterest, blog stalking, and thoughts about what I need on a weekly basis as I look forward to this year.  One thing you will notice that is missing from this binder are my lesson plans!  I'll be posting on my amazing find later on this year!

*insert picture of cover* the cover of my notebook was a download from the internet.  I created a textbox within the oval with a transparent background and white fonts.

Inside, there are eight sections:

1.  Calendar:  I can't remember where I downloaded this calendar from, but you can do a search on the internet to find what kind of calendar works for you.  You can also find some blank calendars and fill them in with the dates yourself.  This toll will help me organize meetings, conferences, and my To Do lists for the month.

2.  Meetings:  This area has a tab for each of the committee and meetings I will have get to attend this school year. (Grade Level, PLC, Vertical Team, TIER team, Spalding training, and Professional Development)

3-5.  Classes:  This section is the biggest space hog of the entire binder.  Since we departmentalize, I am responsible for teaching all 70+ students in our grade level the ELA Common Core Standards.  Each of the three classes has a section and every student has their own space.
     *  Immediately behind the teacher's tab, I have a class list which includes the student's name and number  (This acts as a table of contents for this section.)
     *  Next, I placed a cheat sheet where we compile ALL assessment data for the class.  This comes in handy for TIER team meetings.  This form was created by my amazing, wonderful friend, Ms. Tara!

    *  I have created a Reading Progression chart for each class.  Here I will date when each child has shown mastery of a certain reading level.  I learned early in my career, that if a child shows mastery three times at a reading level, they are ready to move on to the next level.  Mastery is 95% Accuracy or higher.  This insures that the child can read that book at their independent reading level.
     *  In each child's section I have an information sheet.  This sheet is a compilation of others I have found online.  It includes contact information for each child as well as a communication log to document all communication with parents.

    *  There is also a conference form for each child.  This serves as a place for me to write down any information before a scheduled conference, as well as notes taken during the conference.  This form helps me insure ALL important topics are covered.  It isn't a great feeling to realize after the meeting that there was something left out.  This form came from www.thegototeacher.blogspot.com.au

    *  I found the Assessment Profile from Beth Newingham (http://www.scholastic.com/teachers/top-teaching/2013/06/assessment-during-individualized-daily-reading-idr-putting-it-all-together)  If you haven't had a chance to check out her posts, you're missing out!  She is an amazing teacher!  This form provides a great visual of everything I learn about a child academically.  This will be good to summarize student growth at the end of the school year.

     *  I have an Individual Reading Growth graph to use for progress monitoring student's reading level.  This from can be a great visual for parents to see where there child is and how far they have to go to reach their goal.  I am considering using this for a Reading Night with parents that I am planning to have a couple of times this school year!  This also came from Beth Newingham's blog!

     *  In this section, I will also collect observational notes as well as Running Records on students.  I am planning to utilize my iPad app to help me in the collection of this information!  I always send home a form for the parent to fill out about their child.  I get so much wonderful information about the child's interests from this form, as well as parent expectations and wishes for the year.

6.  This next section has information on students who are in TIER.  I'll be completely honest, our TIER management annoys me!  The person in charge is not the most organized and I feel that we are constantly redoing information for that person.  My plan this year is to be ULTRA organized and keep the meetings focused and to the point.  (This binder should help me meet this goal!)

7.  My paper gradebook may be kept in this section...although, with the state moving to PowerSchool, I may nix this and go solely online with my grades.  Since this is a new adoption for us, I will keep my notes for implementation of the new program in this section so that it is handy at all times.

8.  The final section will be used to organize my reading groups and IME groups.  I will store my information so that I know who is in which group and when they are meeting with their instructor.

This 4" binder is a condensed version of what I used to do.  As my hubby says, "That's quite a BINDER!"

I hope this post helps you in your quest to organize the upcoming school year!

Until next time...
I hope this helps you in your quest to organize the upcoming school year!

{It has been a crazy past couple of weeks, and most of the information I used to develop this binder has been gathered over the past couple of years. If I have posted something that is yours, please let me know so that I can give you credit!}
